Resume (English only)
Academic Achievements
  • She has been honored by the Sloan Fellowship, MIT TR35, the Okawa award, an NSF CAREER award, and the PECASE award. She helped found and served on the steering committee for the Berkeley AI Research (BAIR) Lab and is a co-PI of the Center for Human-Compatible AI. She has consulted for Waymo for the past 6 years, helping with the roadmap for deploying an increasingly learning-based safety-critical system.
Research Experience
  • Her research at UC Berkeley has focused on AI alignment, learning reward functions interactively from diverse human feedback forms. She has also contributed to algorithms for human-AI collaboration and coordination, such as fluent cooperation in games, assistance and adaptation in brain-machine interfaces, and autonomous cars sharing the road with human drivers. At Google DeepMind, she leads teams responsible for the safety of Gemini models and preparing for future capabilities while ensuring safety advances hand-in-hand.
Background
  • Currently an Associate Professor in the EECS Department at UC Berkeley, on leave to head AI Safety and Alignment at Google DeepMind. Her research goal is to enable AI agents (from robots to cars to LLMs to recommender systems) to work with, around, and in support of people. She runs the InterACT Lab, focusing on algorithms for human-AI and human-robot interaction.
Miscellany
  • She takes pride in her former students, who have gone on to faculty positions at MIT, Stanford, CMU, and Princeton, and to industry positions at DeepMind, Waymo, and Meta.
