Academic Achievements
  • Developed influential technologies such as Contextual Spelling Correction, Query Suggestion and Advertisement Smart Matching, Information-centric Browsing and Search, Entity Linking (NEMO), Fact Extraction from Web text and News, Vandalism Detection in Collaboratively-built Collections, InstaFact (Hackathon 2016 winner and Data Types in Excel).
Research Experience
  • Had a four-year double rotation in Microsoft product groups, during which he led the NLP team in Bing's Knowledge Graph group (Satori) for 3.5 years and managed a small NLP team in the FUSE Labs for 0.5 year.
Education
  • Joined Microsoft/MSR in 2003 after completing his Ph.D. at Johns Hopkins University, where he was a member of the Center for Speech and Language Processing. Also received an M.S.E. in Computer Science from Johns Hopkins, and an M.Sc. and B.Sc. in Mathematics and Computer Science from the University of Bucharest. Prior to coming to the United States, held a junior faculty position in the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at the University of Bucharest.
Background
  • Research interests include Information Extraction from Large Text Collections, Natural Language Processing, Knowledge Representation, Information Retrieval, and Machine Learning. Currently a researcher in the MSR Redmond lab and the manager of the Knowledge and Reasoning in Language group (formerly known as KTX).
