Academic Achievements
  • Fellow of the ACM (Class of 2021), elected for contributions to information retrieval, human-computer interaction, and computational health. Member of the ACM SIGIR Academy and the ACM SIGCHI Academy. Served as Vice Chair of ACM SIGIR from 2022-2025 and currently serves as Editor-in-Chief of ACM Transactions on the Web. Recipient of the 2022 Tony Kent Strix Award, 2014 Microsoft BCS/BCS IRSG Karen Spärck Jones Award, SIGIR 2013 Best Paper Award, SIGIR 2023 Test of Time Award, SIGIR 2010 Best Paper Award, and SIGIR 2007 Best Paper Award. Book 'Interactions with Search Systems' received the 2017 ASIST Best Information Science Book Award.
Research Experience
  • Led research groups working on multi-agent systems, creation of world and human action models for gameplay ideation, and the move from search engines toward action engines. Former chief scientist at Microsoft Health. Contributed to many Microsoft products including Bing, Xbox, Internet Explorer, Skype, Dynamics, Health, Windows, Cortana, Office (Outlook, Teams, Planner, To Do, Word), and Azure.
Education
  • Received the British Computer Society's (BCS) Distinguished Dissertation Award for the best Computer Science PhD dissertation in the United Kingdom for 2005.
