Joined Qatar Computing Research Institute (QCRI) as a Scientist in 2014, became Senior Scientist in 2019, and Principal Scientist in 2025. Before joining QCRI, was a postdoctoral researcher at the University of California, Berkeley (UCB), working with Prof. Ruzena Bajcsy in the Teleimmersion Lab between 2010-2014.
Education
PhD in Electrical Engineering from Koç University, Istanbul, Turkey in 2010; BSc in Electrical and Electronics Engineering and Computer Engineering from Koç University, Istanbul, Turkey in 2005. Pursued PhD work in the Multimedia, Vision and Graphics Laboratory (MVGL) at Koç University under the supervision of Prof. Engin Erzin, Prof. Yücel Yemez, and Prof. A. Murat Tekalp.
Background
Research interests: computer vision, machine learning, artificial intelligence, remote sensing, multimedia signal processing. Current research focuses on using deep learning techniques on image data, which can be obtained from the Internet, UAVs, or satellites, to improve object recognition and scene understanding in the wild with a particular focus on applications in the social good domain ranging from disaster response and management to sustainable development.
