Academic Achievements
Received the TUBITAK Science Award (highest scientific award in Turkey) in 2004.
Awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award by IEEE Turkey Section on February 11, 2019.
Holds eight US patents.
His research group contributed key technologies to ISO/IEC MPEG-4 and MPEG-7 standards.
Chaired the IEEE Signal Processing Society Technical Committee on Image and Multidimensional Signal Processing (1996–1997).
Editor-in-Chief of Elsevier journal Signal Processing: Image Communication (2000–2010).
Served as Associate Editor or Area Editor for multiple IEEE and academic journals including IEEE Transactions on Signal Processing and IEEE Transactions on Image Processing.
Currently serves on the IEEE Press Board (2018–present) and the Editorial Board of Proceedings of the IEEE (2014–present).
Authored the book Digital Video Processing (Prentice Hall, 1995); second edition published in June 2015.
Served in leadership roles for major conferences, including General Chair of IEEE ICIP 2002 and Technical Program Co-Chair of IEEE ICASSP 2000.
Research Experience
Worked at Eastman Kodak Company, Rochester, New York, from December 1984 to June 1987.
Served at the University of Rochester from July 1987 to June 2005, where he was promoted to Distinguished University Professor.
Professor at Koç University, Istanbul, Turkey, since June 2001.
Dean of Engineering at Koç University between 2010 and 2013.
Participated in several European Framework projects and serves as a project evaluator for the European Commission and a panel member for the European Research Council.
