Academic Achievements
- Received the TUBITAK Science Award (highest scientific award in Turkey) in 2004.
- Awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award by IEEE Turkey Section on February 11, 2019.
- Holds eight US patents.
- His research group contributed key technologies to ISO/IEC MPEG-4 and MPEG-7 standards.
- Chaired the IEEE Signal Processing Society Technical Committee on Image and Multidimensional Signal Processing (1996–1997).
- Editor-in-Chief of Elsevier journal Signal Processing: Image Communication (2000–2010).

- Worked at Eastman Kodak Company, Rochester, New York, from December 1984 to June 1987.
- Served at the University of Rochester from July 1987 to June 2005, where he was promoted to Distinguished University Professor.
- Professor at Koç University, Istanbul, Turkey, since June 2001.
- Dean of Engineering at Koç University between 2010 and 2013.
- Participated in several European Framework projects and serves as a project evaluator for the European Commission and a panel member for the European Research Council.
