Published over 80 peer-reviewed conference and journal papers.
Research Experience
Worked at Microsoft, Facebook, Amazon, and Zalando. Since 2022, has been a professor in Computer Science at Hasso Plattner Institute and the University of Potsdam, leading the research group on Artificial Intelligence and Sustainability. Early career focused on basic scientific research, with a shift towards managing applied science in the later years.
Education
Earned a Diploma degree in Computer Science (with a focus on Computer Graphics and Artificial Intelligence) from the Technical University of Berlin in 1997; followed by a PhD in Theoretical Statistics from the same university in 2000.
Background
Research interests include approximate computing, Bayesian inference and decision making, game theory, information retrieval, natural language processing, computer vision, distributed systems, learning theory, and knowledge representation and reasoning. Committed to applying fundamental research to large-scale real-world problems, aiming to have a positive impact on many people's lives through his work.
Miscellany
Believes in a people-first approach: as a scientist, solves problems that people actually have; as a manager, prioritizes people (development) over project (success). Thinks the greatest breakthroughs will occur at the intersection of existing disciplines.
