Co-authored several books on machine learning, including 'Dive into Deep Learning' (2019), 'Predicting Structured Data' (2006), 'Learning with Kernels' (2002), and others.
Research Experience
Worked as a researcher at the GMD Institute for Software Engineering and Computer Architecture (now part of the Fraunhofer Society). Later, he was a Researcher and Group Leader at the Research School for Information Sciences and Engineering at the Australian National University. Since 2004, he has been a Senior Principal Researcher and Program Leader at the Statistical Machine Learning Program. Currently, he is the VP/Distinguished Scientist for Machine Learning at Amazon Web Services.
Education
Received a Master's degree in Physics from the Technical University of Munich in 1996 and a Doctoral Degree in Computer Science from the Technical University Berlin in 1998.
Background
Research interests include deep learning, scalability of algorithms, kernel methods, and statistical modeling. Particularly interested in state update algorithms, invariances, and statistical testing. Has broad applications in user modeling, document analysis, temporal models, and more.
Miscellany
Interested in finding principled techniques to solve practical problems, especially in large-scale data modeling.
