Academic Achievements
  • IEEE Fellow for contributions to robotic manipulation and human-robot interaction; Lazy Planning work won back-to-back best paper awards at ICAPS 2018 and ICAPS 2019; developed algorithms such as CBiRRT, CHOMP, BIT*, Legibility; his algorithms have run on NASA Robonaut and Mars rover; Google used his algorithms for real-time 3D reconstruction on the Google Project Tango mobile phone; co-founded Berkshire Grey, which is now publicly traded on the New York Stock Exchange; started Amazon's Robotics AI Organization; currently a Distinguished Engineer at Cruise focusing on motion planning and control, and scaling and deployment of self-driving cars worldwide.
Research Experience
  • Moved to UW in 2017 after 18 years at The Robotics Institute at Carnegie Mellon University; founded the Personal Robotics Lab in 2005; led large projects including Intel’s research in robotics, Quality of Life Technologies NSF ERC, DARPA ARM-S, DARPA Robotics Challenge, HONDA Curious Minded Machine program, and DARPA RACER.
