Academic Achievements
  • Has graduated 20 PhD students and is currently supervising another 4 PhD candidates. Author or co-author of more than 200 peer-reviewed publications and 9 patents. Chair and main organizer of several international scientific events. Serves as Editor for Applied Sciences and IEEE IROS, and as Associate Editor for IEEE Robotics and Automation Letters. Former Guest Editor for IEEE Transactions on Robotics and Bionics, Frontiers in Robotics and AI, Journal of Intelligent & Robotic Systems, Journal of Medical Robotics Research, and several IEEE flagship conferences.
Research Experience
  • Currently a Permanent Researcher and Head of the Biomedical Robotics Laboratory at the Italian Institute of Technology (IIT, Genoa). Leads a team of 14 researchers and technicians, collaborating closely with hospitals and industry. Has been a key player in securing over 20 million Euros for research through externally funded projects. Was the PI and coordinator of European projects such as µRALP, TEEP-SLA, AIRCARE, and Robotic Microsurgery.
Education
  • Received a B.Sc. in 1998, an M.Sc. in 2003, and a Ph.D. in 2007 from North Carolina State University (NCSU, USA) in electrical engineering. Worked as a research assistant at the Center for Robotics and Intelligent Machines (CRIM) from 2002 to 2007.

  • Research interests include medical robotics, robot-assisted surgery, laser microsurgery, smart medical devices, computer vision, medical image analysis, user interfaces, mixed and augmented reality, biomedical sensors, systems integration, automation, usability analysis, and robotic micro-manipulation.
