Optimizing Economic Complexity

Existing correlation–complexity mapping approaches for identifying economic diversification lack theoretical optimality guarantees and empirical validation. Method: This paper formalizes diversification as an optimization problem subject to specialization constraints and proposes a novel Economic Complexity Optimization (ECO) algorithm that minimizes a cost function integrating the Economic Complexity Index (ECI), the Product Space network, and gradient-driven neighborhood search. Contribution: The approach overcomes the empirically grounded but theoretically ad hoc limitations of graph-based methods, shifting the paradigm from descriptive analysis to normative, actionable strategy generation. The resulting diversification pathways exhibit superior theoretical coherence and empirical interpretability compared to conventional recommendations. By bridging theory and practice, this work advances economic complexity methodologies toward operational, policy-ready tools. (149 words)

Workplace dependence in urban economies

The widespread adoption of remote work has exacerbated intra-urban inequalities in health risks, social interaction, and economic opportunity. Leveraging high-resolution hourly human mobility data and firm registration records, this study exploits variations in pandemic-related mobility restrictions as a quasi-natural experiment to investigate the drivers of workplace dependence through multidimensional regression and spatial heterogeneity models. The analysis reveals that industry type and firm productivity are key determinants. Moreover, income and gender effects are significantly moderated by distance from the city center, giving rise to a “service trap” in core urban areas: neighborhoods characterized by female-dominated employment and diverse income sources exhibit heightened reliance on in-person attendance, thereby extending remote-work disparities from the individual level to the broader urban ecosystem.

Ranking-based competitive balance measures in Formula One

This study addresses the challenge of effectively measuring competitive balance in Formula 1 racing, with particular attention to the differential importance of rank changes at various positions in the standings. To this end, the authors propose two weighted Kemeny distance metrics that assign greater sensitivity to movements near the top of the ranking. Integrating structural break detection with statistical significance testing, they analyze the evolution of competitive dynamics in Formula 1 from 1950 to 2024 at both race and season levels. The findings reveal a significant deterioration in competitive balance over the past two decades, identify three structural breaks closely aligned with major regulatory changes—highlighting the pivotal role of governance—and demonstrate robustness across alternative weighting schemes, thereby validating the methodological innovation and effectiveness of the proposed approach.

Endogenous Fertility Waves and the Dynamics of Utility in an Overlapping Generations Model

This study investigates the conditions under which the Easterlin hypothesis holds within a neoclassical overlapping generations model featuring endogenous capital accumulation, wages, interest rates, and fertility. By constructing an analytically tractable framework that maps economic dynamics into utility space for the first time, the paper employs continuously differentiable first-order difference equations to analyze intergenerational welfare along non-steady-state paths. The analysis reveals that when fertility is cyclical and children are normal goods, smaller birth cohorts enjoy strictly higher lifetime utility than larger ones due to reduced competitive pressure and greater resource availability. This result holds independently of the position of the golden-rule capital stock, thereby validating the Easterlin hypothesis under specific conditions and offering a novel normative tool for intergenerational welfare comparison.
