- Currently working as extraordinary professor in the Department of Asian Studies and Head of the Department of General Linguistics at Palacký University Olomouc
- Adjunct professor at the Department of Linguistics and Modern Language Studies at the Education University of Hong Kong
- Worked in Linguistics at Nanyang Technological University (NTU) and co-founded the Digital Humanities Research Cluster
- From 2006 to 2009, worked at NICT Information Analysis Laboratory (then the Language Infrastructure Group) in Japan, mainly involved in creating linguistic resources such as a Japanese Treebank and Wordnet
- From 1991 to 2006, worked at NTT mainly on Machine Translation

Research interests include Natural Language Understanding, Computational Lexicography, Digital Humanities, Parsing/Generation, Jacy: an Implemented Grammar of Japanese (a Head-driven Phrase Structure Grammar), Number, Countability, and Numeral Classifiers, Reference and Definiteness, the Japanese Wordnet, the Wordnet Bahasa (Malay and Indonesian), the Open Multilingual Wordnet.
