Academic Achievements
- Has given talks at numerous international conferences and published several papers in academic journals. He is a founding co-chair of the International Conference on Social Media and Society.
Research Experience
- Research areas include social media data analysis, privacy-preserving technologies, and online social network visualization. As the Director of Research at the Social Media Lab, he has been involved in multiple research projects, such as the Russia-Ukraine Conflict Misinfo Dashboard.
Education
- PhD from the iSchool at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2009, MS from the iSchool at Syracuse University in 2005, and BS & MS in Computer Science from Dnipropetrovsk National University in Ukraine in 2003.
Background
- Canada Research Chair in Privacy Preserving Digital Technologies, Professor at the Ted Rogers School of Management at Toronto Metropolitan University (formerly Ryerson University), and Director of Research at the Social Media Lab. Also a Member of the Royal Society of Canada’s College of New Scholars, Artists and Scientists; a founding co-chair of the International Conference on Social Media and Society. His research initiatives explore how the advent of social media and the growing availability of user data are changing the ways in which people and organizations communicate, collaborate, and disseminate information and how these changes impact the social, economic, and political norms and structures of modern society. He is also involved in developing and testing new analytics tools for discovering and visualizing social media data and online social networks.
