Published over 800 papers with more than 30,000 citations. Received numerous patents and awards. Directed international research programs supported by NSF, DARPA, BMBF, and the EU. Member of the National Academy of Sciences of Germany and a Fellow of the IEEE.
Research Experience
Professor of Computer Science at Carnegie Mellon University (USA) and Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (Germany). Director of the International Center for Advanced Communication Technologies (interACT). Developed the first consecutive (1991) and simultaneous (2005) translation systems, mobile speech translators, multimodal smart rooms, and human-robot interfaces.
Education
Received BS, MS, and PhD degrees from MIT and CMU, respectively.
Background
Known for his work on AI, Machine Learning, Multimodal Interfaces, and Speech Translation Systems. He proposed early Neural Network based Speech and Language systems, including the TDNN (the first shift-invariant 'Convolutional' Neural Network), Modular Neural Networks, neural transfer learning, and sequential learning models. Combining advances in ML with work on multimodal interfaces, Waibel and his team developed pioneering solutions to cross-lingual communication.
Miscellany
Founded over 10 companies and organizations that transfer academic results to practical deployment, including the first commercial speech translation system on a phone Jibbigo (2009), the first simultaneous lecture interpretation service (since 2012 at KIT), dialog translators for humanitarian missions (2007-present), and interpretation support at the European Parliament. Served as director of language technologies at Facebook following the acquisition of Jibbigo (2013-14).
