Served as a University Research Professor in the Department of Computer Science at Memorial University of Newfoundland, where he was head of the department from 2003 to 2009 and from 2012 to 2016; Postdoctoral research associate at the Institute of Theoretical Physics, University of Stuttgart; Visiting and Senior Researcher at the Central Research Lab, now the Advanced Technology R&D Center of Mitsubishi Electric Corporation in Japan and at Mitsubishi Electric Research Labs (MERL) in Cambridge, MA, USA; Associate Professor for Applied Computer Science in the Department of Computer Science of the Technical University of Dortmund from 1993 to 2003.

Received a 'Diplom in Physik' degree (equivalent to M.Sc.) in Physics from Ludwig-Maximilians-University in Munich; Obtained Dr.rer.nat (PhD) from the Department of Physics at Technische Hochschule Karlsruhe, now Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT).
