Has authored or co-authored around 350 papers and holds more than 100 granted patents. His research has been recognized by numerous honors and best paper awards. He is a fellow of the IEEE and received the 2019 Microwave Application Award from the IEEE Microwave Theory and Techniques Society for outstanding technical contribution in the field.
Research Experience
Joined the microwave and surface acoustic wave research group of Siemens, Munich, in 1996; from 2000 to 2003, he headed the microwave systems group at Siemens Corporate Technology, responsible for product developments in commercial microwave sensor and communication systems; in 2003, moved to Clausthal University of Technology as a professor and director of the Institute of Electrical Information Technology; since 2011, has led the Institute of Microwaves and Photonics (LHFT) at Friedrich-Alexander Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU), a world-leading center for microwave research and scholarship.
Education
Born in Dortmund, Germany, in 1964. Received the Dipl.-Ing. degree and the Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering from Ruhr-University, Bochum, in 1991 and 1996 respectively.

Research interests include microwave theory and techniques, radar systems, local positioning systems, wireless motion capture and localization, imaging and localization algorithms, machine learning and neural network-based radar signal processing, wireless sensor systems and sensor networks, and RFID.
