Published several pre-prints and peer-reviewed papers, such as 'Randomization Tests for Conditional Group Symmetry', 'Causal Inference with Cocycles', 'Distinguishing Cause from Effect with Causal Velocity Models', and more. Research is supported by funding from NSERC, CANSSI, and UBC.
Research Experience
Currently an Assistant Professor of Statistics at the University of British Columbia. Has supervised multiple PhD and MSc students, including Boyan Beronov, Kenny Chiu, Gian Carlo Diluvi, Kevin Lam, Alex Sharp, Johnny Xi, and others.
Education
PhD: Columbia University, advisor Peter Orbanz; Postdoc: CSML group at the University of Oxford, advisor Yee Whye Teh; BSc in Physics: Stanford University and Northwestern University.
Background
Research interests include statistics and machine learning, with an emphasis on probabilistic approaches. Focuses on scientific knowledge acquisition, the interplay of models, data, inference, and prediction. Specific areas include uses and benefits of symmetry in modeling, statistical hypothesis tests, integrating probability, statistics, and data with scientific models, and the role of causality in learning from observations and interactions.
