Academic Achievements
  • She is the author or co-author of more than three hundred publications, including books, journals, and international and national conferences. She has delivered numerous invited talks, seminars, and short courses. She is an Associate Editor of the IEEE Transactions on Cybernetics, an IEEE Senior Member, IEEE SMC Senior member, a member of IARP International Association of Pattern Recognition, a member of the International Neural Network Society (INNS), a member of APCA Portuguese Association of Automatic Control, a member of the Portuguese Association for Artificial Intelligence (APPIA), a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), and a member of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM). She has received several awards and recognitions.
Research Experience
  • She is the Former Director of the Center of Informatics and Systems of the University of Coimbra (CISUC), and the former President of the Portuguese Association of Pattern Recognition (APRP). She acted as Coordinator of the Bachelor in Informatics Engineering (2011/13, 2013/15, 2015/17) and the Master in Informatics Engineering for three terms (1997/99, 2007/09, 2009/11). She is a member of the Adaptive Computation Group of CISUC and Founder and Director of the Laboratory of Artificial Neural Networks (LARN) for over 20 years. She has coordinated and participated in several national and international projects, including European FP6, FP7, and H2020 research projects such as FP6-MYHEART, FP7-EPILEPSIAE, SUDOE, H2020 REMAP, and KYKLOS.

  • She holds a Ph.D. and Habilitation in Informatics Engineering from the University of Coimbra.
