Presented at top hacker venues (such as BlackHat USA, Asia), top computer security conferences (like ACM CCS, IEEE S&P), top empirical software engineering journals (like ESEJ, IEEE TSE), and top risk analysis journals (such as Risk Analysis). Received the Ten Years Most Influential Paper Award from IEEE Requirements Engineering for work on security and trust in socio-technical systems. Recent research includes an observational study on privacy management in schools published at the IEEE S&P Symposium, a paper on mathematical bounds for using machine learning for automated vulnerability repair at ICSE-NIER, and another ICSE-NIER paper on using confident learning to determine when to drop confusing samples from datasets.
Research Experience
Currently a part-time Chair of Foundational Security at Vrije Universiteit, Amsterdam (since 2020) and a part-time Professor of Cybersecurity at the University of Trento (since 2001). Coordinated several European projects, including a multidisciplinary project with economists, sociologists, and computer scientists on socio-economic aspects of security (SECONOMICS), and the Sec4AI4Sec Project on cybersecurity for AI-augmented systems. Local responsible for the OPTICS2 EU project at the Italian National Consortium for Informatics (CyberSecurity Lab).
