Academic Achievements
- Paper 'NGLUEni: Benchmarking and Adapting Pretrained Language Models for Nguni Languages' won a best paper award at the AfricaNLP workshop co-located with ICLR 2024; Multiple papers accepted at conferences such as ACL, EMNLP, NAACL; Participated in several international conferences and workshops, including COLING, EMNLP, NAACL, etc.
Research Experience
- Three-month research internship at NICT Advanced Translation Technology Laboratory in Kyoto, Japan, from May to August 2023; Involved in various research projects such as machine translation for African languages, neural morphological tagging, etc.

- PhD under Jan Buys; Master's degree from the University of Amsterdam, supervised by Martha Lewis; Undergraduate degrees in Computer Science and Mathematical Statistics from Stellenbosch University, South Africa.
Background
- Research interests include low-resource NLP, data-efficient modeling, and linguistically informed interpretability. Currently a Lecturer (≈ US Assistant Professor) in the Computer Science Department at the University of Cape Town and a researcher in UCT NLP.
