Academic Achievements

Research Experience
- Conducted postdoctoral research at the University of Sheffield from 1979 to 1981, then moved to Columbia University in 1981. In 1995, he joined the University of California, San Diego, as a Professor in the Department of Pharmacology. In 2014, he became the Associate Director for Data Science at NIH. In January 2017, he accepted a position as the director of the University of Virginia's Data Science Institute.

- Obtained his PhD in 1979 from Flinders University, specializing in physical chemistry.

- Known for his work in data science, computational biology, scholarly communication, and bioinformatics. He is an Australian bioinformatician, non-fiction writer, and businessman.
