He was the first awardee of the Second Prize of the National Natural Science Award (2020); his doctoral student, Wang Qiang, won the world championship in the VOT2018 Visual Real-time Tracking Competition.

Since April 2000, he has been working at the National Laboratory of Pattern Recognition, Institute of Automation, Chinese Academy of Sciences; he has conducted visiting research at Columbia University, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, University of Reading, Birkbeck College, University of London, Université Bordeaux III, Monash University, University of Wollongong, and National University of Singapore.
