Academic Achievements
Work has been featured in venues such as TechCrunch and GigaOM. Co-founded a startup, DataSquid. A former Siebel Scholar, Carnegie Mellon Innovation Fellow, and Microsoft Graduate Research Fellow. Current research is primarily supported by grants from the National Science Foundation, Bloomberg, and Microsoft.
Research Experience
Former faculty member at the School of Information Science at Cornell University, where he maintained his own research group. Currently consults with organizations on the implementation of AI-powered tools and data analytics platforms. Conducted summer research at Google and Microsoft Research.

Background
Researches human-AI collaboration, data visualization, and social computing. Current work focuses on helping both experts and everyday people make sense of data using empirically validated design practices and AI-augmented tools. Particularly interested in how human-AI collaborations can assist novice users in managing large amounts of complex information while maintaining independence, intellectual property rights, and trustworthiness. Integrates interdisciplinary knowledge from psychology (sensemaking theory), art history, and design to create effective and usable tools, aiming to make data accessible to as many people as possible.
Miscellany
Developed a continuing interest in Japanese and Chinese art history, leading to a collection of ink paintings and woodblock prints. In spare time, experiments with 3D printing, makes ceramics, and travels. Has hosted radio shows on KRLX, was once nipped by a pet tiger, had some video game themed pottery briefly become internet-famous, and sometimes attends conventions for vintage fountain pens.
