Published over 100 research papers, with a Google Scholar h-index of 40. Holds two US patents, one related to multilingual text mining. In 2021, supervised an interdisciplinary student team (Team Proto) that won the bronze prize in the Alexa Prize Socialbot Grand Challenge 4.
Research Experience
Currently a Professor and Associate Chair in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at the University at Buffalo, The State University of New York. Research focuses on developing socialbots capable of engaging in empathetic, interesting, and purposeful conversations. Leads a research group focused on Conversational AI for Social Good. Has worked extensively with the US Government to develop innovative multilingual text mining solutions.
Education
Received a B. Math degree from the University of Waterloo (Canada) and a PhD in Computer Science from the State University of New York at Buffalo.
Background
Research interests include natural language processing, artificial intelligence, machine learning, and information retrieval. Teaches graduate courses in information retrieval and natural language processing and offers seminars on various AI topics. Supervises students' research in both the CSE department and the Linguistics department.

Served as Chief Data Scientist at PeaceTech Lab, a non-profit incubated within the United States Institute of Peace in Washington, DC. Founded and directed technology start-ups focusing on big data analytics solutions, with two of these companies being acquired by large media analytics companies.
