Academic Achievements
  • The Talk of Europe project supports a quantitative, longitudinal analysis of the EU parliamentary debates. The PoliMedia project showcases the potential of cross-media analysis for research in the humanities, winning the LinkedUp Veni Competition and the Open Data prize at the LODLAM challenge. VRE4EIC project aspires a Europe-wide interoperable Virtual Research Environment. ION project constructed and made available the ION corpus for large-scale analysis of images used in online news.
Research Experience
  • Worked on linking heterogeneous and often cross-media collections, data modeling, and semantic search. Involved in the Talk of Europe project, which translates the proceedings of the meetings of the European Parliament to Linked Data. Co-organizer of the USEWOD workshop series (2011-2016), which released a research dataset of usage logs of several Linked Data servers, including DBPedia and Bioportal.

  • PhD in Computer Science from VU University Amsterdam in 2006 with a thesis titled 'Semantic Annotation for Retrieval of Visual Resources.'
Background
  • Interested in human-centered, responsible AI in the culture and media sectors. Examples of recent research include: measuring bias and diversity in recommender systems; examining biased (colonial) terminology in knowledge graphs; and discovering usage patterns in a digital library. Leading the Human-Centered Data Analytics group at CWI. Co-director of the Cultural AI Lab and participant in the AI, Media and Democracy Lab.
