Resume (English only)
Academic Achievements
  • Published over 300 papers, including around 150 IEEE Transaction papers and 150 IEEE conference papers, 15 Bell Labs Technical Memorandum, and contributed to 40+ US patents on wireless systems. Key contributor to 4 IEEE standard contributions (IEEE 802.22 WRAN / Cognitive Radio). Received three best paper awards from IEEE ICC 2008, IEEE ChinaCOM 2008, and IEEE CICC 2007. Currently an Area Editor of IEEE Transactions on Wireless Communications and other journals.
Research Experience
  • Worked as a system engineer at Hong Kong Telecom (PCCW) from 1992 to 1995. Joined Bell Labs - Lucent Technologies, New Jersey in 1997 as a Member of Technical Staff, working on advanced wireless technologies such as IS95, 3G1X, UMTS, and wideband CDMA base station ASIC design. Has been a professor at the Department of ECE, HKUST since August 2004.
Education
  • Obtained B.Eng (1st Hons) from the Department of EEE, University of Hong Kong in 1992. Studied for Ph.D. at the University of Cambridge with scholarships including Sir Edward Youde Memorial Fellowship, Rotoract Scholarship, and Croucher Foundation Scholarship, completing the degree in two years.
Background
  • Main research interests include wireless communications for 5G systems (e.g., massive MIMO systems, sparse recovery, and channel estimation), content-centric wireless networking, wireless networking for mission-critical control, cloud-assisted autonomous vehicles, and machine learning. Mathematical tools used include convex optimization, matrix analysis, information theory, stochastic optimization and control, etc.
Miscellany
  • Technology advisor and consultant for companies like ZTE and Huawei, leading several R&D projects on B3G, WiMAX, and Cognitive Radio. Founder and director of the Huawei-HKUST Innovation Lab.
