Academic Achievements
  • Written 20 books and collections and published over 240 scientific articles. His latest book is 'The Shape of Thought: reasoning in the age of AI'. Other books include 'Skyping the family: interpersonal video communication and domestic life', 'Choice: the sciences of reason in the 21st century', 'Texture: human expression in the age of communications overload', and 'The Myth of the Myth of the Paperless Office' (with Abi Sellen). He has patents on various new concepts including secure cloud-based interaction devices, mobile communication apps, wearable security systems, and family life appliances. Elected as a Fellow of the ACM for leadership in the field of Human-Computer Interaction. 'The Myth of the Paperless Office' won an IEEE award and was described by the Financial Times as 'the only book worth reading on office technology that year' (2003).
Research Experience
  • Led research teams at Xerox and Microsoft, became the UK’s first professor of socio-digital systems, and was the director of The Digital World Research Centre at the University of Surrey. Currently, he is a Professor of Socio-Digital Systems at Lancaster, where he is also PI on the EPSRC Future Places Centre and Director of the Leverhulme Centre for Material Social Futures. He is a Visiting Professor in the College of Science at the University of Swansea, Wales.
Background
  • Research interests include humans, computers, interaction, and society. As a researcher and scientist, he studies how new technologies shape us and how we in turn shape our technologies. His work covers topics ranging from the social impact and design of mobile phones to the future of family communication and the latest artificial intelligence.

  • Lives in Cambridge and Kirkby Lonsdale, North Yorks. Married with three children, the youngest of whom is still at university. Provides consulting through Social Shaping Research, Ltd. A Fellow of the IEEE and the Royal Society of Arts. Published an auto-fiction book, 'The Scent of a Pool' (Pegasus).
