Published an open-access survey paper on legal information extraction in the Knowledge and Information Systems journal; a paper titled 'Multimodal RAG Enhanced Visual Descriptions' has been accepted as a short paper for ACM CIKM 2025; leading the EU Horizon Europe Marie Skłodowska Curie Staff Exchange project OMINO, which applies information retrieval, retrieval-augmented generation, and generative AI to tackle multilevel information overload.
Research Experience
Currently, Full Professor and Head of the School of Applied Data Science at Modul University Vienna, Austria, and Adjunct Professor at Bern University of Applied Sciences in Biel/Bienne, Switzerland. Previously, he was Reader (Associate Professor equivalent) in Data Science at the University of Wolverhampton, UK, and founder of the DAIREL research group. Before that, he was Senior Lecturer at the University of Bedfordshire, UK, and a member of the Information Retrieval group at the University of Glasgow, UK.
Education
PhD from the University of Duisburg-Essen, and Diploma (Diplom-Informatiker, MSc equivalent) in Computer Science from the University of Dortmund. He is a BCS Fellow as well as a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
Background
Full Professor in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence (AI), with a focus on human-centric Information Retrieval, generative AI, and its application in fields such as Digital Libraries. He is the chair of the BCS Information Retrieval Specialist Group (BCS-IRSG) and was the general chair of ACM CIKM 2023 and is the programme chair of ACM JCDL 2025.
