Academic Achievements
Published multiple works on human-machine collaboration, creative writing tools, and filmmaking tools; launched projects like Dramatron for professional screenplay co-writing; published research on cultural general intelligence and communicative capital; introduced StoryCentaur as a creative writing tool; published my Ph.D. thesis 'Humour-in-the-loop: Improvised Theatre with Interactive Machine Learning Systems'; launched TalkGenerator.com for automatically generating engaging presentation slide decks; founded Improbotics, a theatre lab pioneering performance alongside generative AI; started HumanMachine and A.L.Ex. the Artificial Language Experiment.
Research Experience
I research how humans and machines work alongside one another in creative collaborations. I interned at Google Brain and Magenta, Apple, and Twitter during my Ph.D.
Education
I completed my Ph.D. in Computing Science from the University of Alberta with the Alberta Machine Intelligence Institute. I also completed my Masters and Bachelors in Biomedical Engineering at the University of Alberta.
Background
My goal is to understand intelligent interactions between humans and machines. I’m a Senior Research Scientist with Google DeepMind, where I work on getting the best AI into the hands of the best creators to tell otherwise impossible stories. I am also an Associate Industry Member at Mila - the Quebec Artificial Intelligence Institute in Montreal, Canada and a Lab Scientist with the Creative Destruction Lab where I support massively scalable science-based startups. I also improvise with Rapid Fire Theatre and Improbotics.
Miscellany
Interests include improvisation and have written about the Cherry Pick Ratio, early adopters using AI for learning, research, and teaching.
