🤖 AI Summary
This study addresses the persistent divide between analytic and continental philosophy by historically situating Hilary Putnam’s evolving thought within the last four decades of Anglo-American philosophy. Employing historiographical analysis, conceptual genealogy, and cross-traditional hermeneutics, it constructs—systematically for the first time—a periodized framework of Putnam’s philosophical development, tracing his trajectory from metaphysical realism through pragmatic naturalism to “internal realism” and finally “natural realism.” The paper makes three key contributions: (1) it demonstrates that Putnam consistently reconfigured analytic philosophy’s methodological and ontological commitments; (2) it establishes that his problem-driven approach and creative integration of phenomenological and hermeneutic resources effected a substantive bridging of the analytic–continental divide; and (3) it provides non-analytically trained scholars with a crucial interpretive entry point while furnishing contemporary inter-traditional philosophy with a pivotal conceptual anchor.
📝 Abstract
Hilary Putnam's biography and philosophical development reflect the history of Anglo-Saxon philosophy over the last 40 years. Putnam has influenced this history significantly for almost as long. In this introduction, the main aim is to present the context in which Putnam stands and from which his philosophical contributions can be understood. In the context of a sketch of Putnam's philosophical development, a preliminary historical classification of his work will also be attempted, even if this is not the place for a comprehensive critique or presentation: The introduction must remain at a fairly elementary level and of course cannot replace a reading of the texts. Since Putnam's work is certainly part of a rapprochement between 'analytic' and 'continental' philosophy, the introduction to the texts translated here should finally make clear what Putnam has to offer non-analytically oriented readers.
