Microsoft Research New York City (MSR NYC) is seeking a Senior Researcher whose work focuses on understanding and influencing the ways that artificial intelligence (AI) systems and society shape one another on multiple scales (e.g., individuals, groups, organizations, society as a whole) and over multiple timeframes. We are particularly interested in candidates who do interdisciplinary research on sociotechnical approaches to AI evaluation and measurement; AI and critical thought; and the challenges of responsible AI in industry. We especially encourage candidates with backgrounds in statistics, AI safety, human–computer interaction, and the social sciences to apply.
Responsibilities
As a Senior Researcher, you will collaboratively define a research agenda with other researchers, applied scientists, engineers, and policy-makers. As a member of a world-class research organization, you will contribute to state-of-the-art research projects, and you will be able to realize your ideas in products and services that are used worldwide.
Qualifications
Minimum
Doctorate in relevant field (e.g., AI/ML, NLP, statistics, HCI, information science, political science, sociology) OR Master's Degree in relevant field (e.g., AI/ML, NLP, statistics, HCI, information science, political science, sociology) and 3+ years related research experience on AI and society OR Bachelor's Degree in relevant field (e.g., AI/ML, NLP, statistics, HCI, information science, political science, sociology) and 4+ years related research experience on AI and society OR equivalent experience
Preferred
Experience publishing academic papers as a lead author or essential contributor in top research venues Experience working in a highly collaborative, fast-paced, interdisciplinary research environment Experience working in an industry research environment Experience approaching AI from a sociotechnical perspective Participation and activity in the research community Effective written and verbal communication skills
