Monocular Depth Perception Enhancement Based on Joint Shading/Contrast Model and Motion Parallax (JSM)
This study addresses the limitations of conventional stereoscopic 3D displays, which rely on binocular disparity, require specialized hardware, and often induce visual fatigue, thereby failing to effectively convey depth on standard 2D screens. To overcome these challenges, this work proposes the Joint Shading and Motion (JSM) framework—the first approach to integrate joint modeling of shading and contrast cues with motion parallax for monocular depth enhancement without requiring any special hardware. The method operates independently on conventional 2D or 3D displays and complements binocular cues, significantly improving perceived depth volume and range. Through ablation studies, qualitative analysis, and user subjective evaluations, the effectiveness and practical utility of JSM in enhancing depth perception are rigorously validated.
