Parametric type design in the era of variable and color fonts
This work addresses the limited parametric modeling capability in variable and color font design. We propose a modern parametric font design methodology based on MetaPost, reviving and extending Knuth’s foundational parametric principles. Our approach establishes an open-source, end-to-end toolchain supporting mathematically precise modeling and flexible design iteration, integrating OpenType Font Variations, Python-based automation, and SVG-in-OT color font technology. To our knowledge, this is the first systematic realization of MetaPost-driven, end-to-end variable font design and generation. We publicly release two high-quality variable fonts, demonstrating that our method simultaneously preserves geometric rigor, engineering practicality, and expressive typographic design. The framework advances parametric font research by introducing a novel paradigm and providing a reusable, open technical pathway for scalable, mathematically grounded font development.
